The effects of the July fire of 2022 in Palmela reveal elements that were previously unnoticed, useful for rediscovering the natural and cultural heritage of the territory: geological formations, natural topography and ruined vernacular constructions in stone masonry.
Between Serra dos Gaiteiros, Serra do Louro and the slope of Palmela’s Castle, Sentinel-2 witnesses the past, the action and the consequences of the fire in Arrábida Natural Parkand reports a maximum area of 460 hectares which was consumed by the fire. The three types of record – True Colour, False Colour and Humidity Index – compare the modification of the landscape and assess its condition, with regard to its natural image, the density/ state of health of the vegetation and the water concentration on the vegetation, respectively.
